Byzantine iconography is one of the most distinguished forms of art. It flourished during the golden years of the Byzantine Empire, influenced by ancient Greek palace painting, as well as Egyptian and Mediterranean coastal art. It is a purely symbolic art, not only in what is depicted but also in the painting technique itself. The abstract representation of saints aims to emphasize the spirit rather than the realism of matter. The color palette is earthy (pigments derived from the earth, metals, and minerals), partly due to the technological limitations of the time and partly to reinforce the sense of humility. The colors chosen for the saints' clothing and backgrounds are not random; they each carry deep symbolism. There are several schools of byzantine art. The most prominent are the Cretan school, which follows a monastic approach with a limited color range and minimal shading, emphasizing simplicity, and the Macedonian school, which is richer in both color use and shading detail, showing a clear influence from Russian iconography. Another school blends these two traditions, incorporating elements of Greek folk art and a color palette inspired by the unique Greek light. This is the school of the iconographer Kontoglou, established around 1950.This is also the school that our company follows in creating icons—using traditional byzantine colors infused with the magic of Greece’s unparalleled light. Our themes extend beyond orthodox teachings, encompassing the entire Christian tradition, aiming to bring the uniqueness of byzantine art to the wider Christian world. Our colors are handmade, in accordance with this ancient tradition, resulting in a truly unique final artwork.
